Michigan copper is native copper from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, one of the few places in the world where copper occurs in large, pure metallic form rather than as an ore that requires smelting. It has been mined and used by Indigenous peoples of the Great Lakes region for over 7,000 years, making it one of the oldest metal-working traditions in North America. This heart-shaped piece is carved from solid native copper, not plated or alloyed.
